This year our monthly meetings will feature demos and presentations about different aspects of the process of making comics. Our special guest presenter for September is Alex Nall. See details below. 

Alex will show us how he used photos, interviews, and other reference material to create scenes from his biography of Fred Rogers, ‘Let Some Word That Is Heard Be Yours’. He will also show other examples of memoir/bio from other artists. Participants will create their own (brief) biography of someone they know or someone they want to research.

Alex Nall is a cartoonist and teaching artist living in Chicago. His book ‘Teaching Comics: Volume One’ was nominated for a 2016 DINKY Award and his biography of Fred Rogers ‘Let Some Word That Is Heard Be Yours’ was released in May 2016. His comics have been featured in Newcity, the Chicago Reader, Kilgore Quarterly, and Two Cookie Minimum. His website is alexnall.blogspot.com

The August edition of the northside comic artists newsletter is now available. This month’s edition features two local events, an announcement about a special event, and links to a youtube tutorial on using an Ames guide and a suggested book on inking. Our special presentation scheduled for Wednesday August 2nd at 7pm has been cancelled. Ali’s presentation will be rescheduled, so keep an eye out for a note on that from our usual channels.

This year our monthly meetings will feature demos and presentations about different aspects of the process of making comics. Our special guest presenter for August is Ali Cantarella. See details below. 

Ali Cantarella will be joining us to discuss her comics- and illustration techniques involving non-traditional media like wine and coffee. This event is DEFINITELY BYOB and we will be doing hands-on work. Some wine (for people 21+) and coffee will be available for painting and/or drinking, but we may not have enough so if you have a favorite wine or coffee  to drink and/or paint with, please bring it along. Also, if you have watercolor supplies including brushes and paper, please bring those. We will have some supplies on-hand but we may not have enough for everyone.

This year our monthly meetings will feature demos and presentations about different aspects of the process of making comics. It’s Christmas in July because we have a second presenter on July 12th! Our special guest presenter is Will Porter. See details below. 

Will Porter will be joining us to discuss his comics-making process. Specifically he’ll share some of his image construction methods and comic-ing processes with some examples from prior work and a demonstration of a technique he uses for splicing hand drawn textures into digital pieces. Along the way he’ll also share his experiences in self-publishing.

Will Porter is a terrestrial mammal, cartoonist, and illustrator based in Chicago. His work has been featured in SAIC’s F Newsmagazine, Xerox Candybar, and Printed in Blood’s The Thing Artbook. Will has also written, illustrated and published his own comic, Dinosaur Sheriff since 2009. You can see more of is work here and here.

Pascal will be walking us through his process for creating a cover for the comic ‘Red Sunrise’. See details below.

Pascal Saint-Clair will be joining us to demonstrate the process of making a comic book cover using pencil, pen & ink, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator by walking through his process in creating the cover for the comic Red Sunrise. He will also answer any questions people have.

Pascal Saint-Clair is a graphic designer, fantasy illustrator, and comic book artist in the Chicago area. Pascal’s work has been featured in numerous small-press and self-published books including the recently kickstarted comic Red Sunrise.  You can see some of Pascal’s work here.
