I did a group survey last month and I think it has been helpful for planning future events. For instance, the survey indicated that many group members were interested in learning about Manga Studio 5. So I set up a demonstration last week at the Edgewater Workbench by a Manga Studio veteran. The initial reports I’ve received from those who attended were very positive.
The survey also informed me that many of the group members have not been able to attend an event because they can’t make it out on Thursday nights and/or they cannot make it to Edgewater. So in the past few weeks I’ve been pounding the pavement and shaking hands trying to find places that will host us. I think I’ve made some progress.
Starting June 28th Geek Bar Beta will be hosting bi-weekly drink and draw nights on Sundays at 7. This is already posted on the meetup page and many people have already signed up. It should be fun. Finding another location is tough but I think I may have found one.
On Thursday I had a meeting with Ron and Ryvre at G-Mart Comics in Logan Square. For those of you who are unaware, G-Mart is one of the best comic shops in Chicago and they are huge supporters of not only the arts, but also of all things geek (they have a weekly board game night, host writing duels, and soon should also be hosting D&D games on a weekly basis). If you’ve never been, I highly recommend that you check them out. I’ve never met a more friendly or knowledgeable comic shop staff and believe me when I say that I’ve been to most of the comics stores in the city.
We’re going to do a preliminary drawing meeting on Monday, June 29th and if the meeting is well-attended we may be able to make it a weekly or bi-weekly thing. It will start at 7pm and run until 9:30pm. If you’ve never been to one of our events, the format is pretty simple, we get together and draw. Some people doodle and some are working on full-fledged comic projects. It doesn’t matter if you’re a hardened veteran or if you’ve never picked up a pencil. All are welcome. If you don’t have something, don’t worry, we often do group activities as well, like random drawing prompts or collective comics. It’s always fun.
G-Mart is located in Logan Square on N. Kedzie Ave directly across from the Logan Square blue line stop. If you are driving, word is that you may be able to find free on-street parking in the neighborhood. However, I got rid of my car last month and haven’t driven in a while, so I make no guarantee.
The event is BYOB, so feel free to bring some drinks and a snack. There’s also a liquor store and a few restaurants very close by if you forget something or get hungry during the meetup.
I hope to see you there!
Note: You’re welcome to attend regardless of whether you RSVP, but it helps for planning purposes if you sign up and RSVP for our meetings via our meetup page: www.meetup.com/NorthSideComics.
